Tight Bounds for Asynchronous Collaborative Grid Exploration

چکیده
Consider a small group of mobile agents whose goal is to locate a certain cell in a two-dimensional infinite grid. The agents operate in an asynchronous environment, where in each discrete time step, an arbitrary subset of the agents execute one atomic look-compute-move cycle. The protocol controlling each agent is determined by a (possibly distinct) finite automaton. The only means of communication is to sense the states of the agents sharing the same grid cell. Whenever an agent moves, the destination cell of the movement is chosen by the agent’s automaton from the set of neighboring grid cells. We study the minimum number of agents required to locate the target cell within finite time and our main result states a tight lower bound for agents endowed with a global compass. Furthermore, we show that the lack of such a compass makes the problem strictly more difficult and present tight upper and lower bounds for this

A General Lower Bound for Collaborative Tree Exploration
We consider collaborative graph exploration with a set of k agents. All agents start at a common vertex of an initially unknown graph and need to collectively visit all other vertices. We assume agents are deterministic, vertices are distinguishable, moves are simultaneous, and we allow agents to communicate globally. For this setting, we give the first non-trivial lower bounds that bridge the ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Mediational Artifact Types on EFL Learners’ Writing Complexity: Collaboration vs. Asynchronous Artifacts
The present study was an attempt to investigate the significance of environmental changes on the develo p- ment of writing in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context with respect to the individual. This study also compared the impacts of collaboration and asynchronous computer mediation (ACM) on the writing complexity of EFL learners. To this end, three intact writing classes were designate...
متن کاملOptimal Grid Exploration by Asynchronous Oblivious Robots
We propose optimal (w.r.t. the number of robots) solutions for the deterministic terminating exploration (exploration for short) of a grid-shaped network by a team of k asynchronous oblivious robots in the asynchronous non-atomic model, so-called CORDA. In more details, we first consider the ATOM model. We show that it is impossible to explore a grid of at least three nodes with less than three...
متن کاملInvestigating Dynamic Writing Assessment in a Web 2.0 Asynchronous Collaborative Computer-Mediated Context
This study aims at investigating the effect of dynamic assessment (DA) on L2 writing achievement if applied via blogging as a Web 2.0 tool, as well as examining which pattern of interaction is more conducive to learning in such an environment. The results of the study indicate that using weblogs to provide mediation contributes to the enhancement of the overall writing performance, vocabulary a...
متن کاملGrid Minors in Damaged Grids
We prove upper and lower bounds on the size of the largest square grid graph that is a subgraph, minor, or shallow minor of a graph in the form of a larger square grid from which a specified number of vertices have been deleted. Our bounds are tight to within constant factors. We also provide less-tight bounds on analogous problems for higher-dimensional grids.
